Sea Maiden 27 Zeta and Sea Master

Art and story by: Robert Kline

This beautiful Sea Maiden and Sea Master illustration is from a collection of Sea Maidens (mermaids), Sea Babies (mermaid babies), Sea Masters (merman), pirates and fairies created by renowned artist and novelist Robert Kline of St. Augustine, Florida. The illustrations are from Robert’s novel The Forgotten Voyage of H.M.S. Baci in which Edmund C. Roberts describes in his log, his various Sea Maiden, Sea Baby and Sea Master sightings.  The following is the excerpt for this illustration:

It was a magnificent day for paranoia. Edmund C. Roberts looked to his accompanying naturalist, Dr. Christina Gebeaux and in the spirit of the moment whispered. “I’ve begun to believe our voyage is compromised.” He looked about furtively as he spoke – though they were miles from their ship and likely from any other member of their genus or species – they being alone on a beach along the southern coast of Oregon. Dr, Gebeaux looked to Roberts to see if he was specking in jest. They’d departed the Baci Finale hours earlier in Roberts’ turbine launch, roaring up the coast on an unusually calm sea, throttling the quiet with the boat’s insistent whine. “Really? She tentatively teased in a forced whisper.

Roberts missed her tone. “ Tell me; this entire voyage, have you had so much as a glimpse of our bloody captain? Fleeting even? I saw him at the docks—as you did—the night before our departure and not since. I have verily forced myself upon the first mate to manage a meeting, but to no avail. (Now there’s a dodgy character if ever there breathes one). He consistently manages to ward off my attempts with a rash of excuses–each more fantastic then the last. I believe I would incite mutiny if it weren’t my ship”.

At about this juncture Roberts realized the good doctor was not hanging on his every word—rather, she was studying something at the far extreme of their beach; it having only recently emerged from the receding morning shadows. He followed her gaze and squinted into the distance.

“Oh my,” he exclaimed at last, followed by, “I say, what have we interrupted?” To which she responded. “It would appear we have not.”
For there in the distance a Sea Master and Sea Maiden lay together, for all the would slumbering whilst en embrace. “Good lord,” Roberts insisted, “how could they have missed our arrival? We hardly sneaked into the bay!”
Perhaps they were preoccupied,” Gebeaux mused, to which Roberts added, “Quite”.

His journal reads:
Am apparently alone in my solitude. Sea Maiden and Sea Master together. Did not attempt a capture.
